There’s Hope for Women Over 50 YET!

July 30, 2009 //  by Robin//  2 Comments

I still feel the same, ...just different!
I still feel the same, ...just different!

I am 50 plus… 😉 That's enough info for the story.

I'm the mother of 5, which means I'm normally carting around 8-10 kids at a time, with their friends included.
I took 5 of them to Robert Moses yesterday, and was brave enough to wear my black bikini. Now, I admit, in the right lighting, I think I look damn good in that little black bikini. If you put me in a dressing room with flourescent lighting, in that same bikini? … I'd die right there in my tracks!

All kids are behind my chair, doing their thing, I see them get up, and they tell me they're going to the shore. I'm sitting there, minding my own biz, texting…(for a change) Honest to God, I'm worse than the kids, but next thing I know, 3 young men, CUTE young men, walk up to me, and ask if I'd like to join their group in front for a beer. I was like a deer caught in the headlights! WHAT?? "I'm old enough to be their mothers for God's sake," is what was going through my head… while at the same time, I kept my cool, and smiled, while saying, " thank you, but I'm good."
They were relentless. They came back and asked yet again! I will say, I was flattered that 23 year old young men, found me appealing to look at in BROAD daylight, pardon the pun… but I again refused, while smiling my grateful thanks! LOL!

My kids came back and asked if I'd join them at the shore, I put on my dress and as I walked past these boys, I overheard one of them saying, "wait… are they hers? She's older than we thought!"

OMG. The spotlight was wonderful while it lasted…although I tend to think it's the dress… or maybe as I've been saying all along, it's "what's underneath that little dress," that stirs people up. Make sure you watch my video to get that insider.

Moral of the story is, don't be afraid to put on your bikini… throw a throw over it, and let people wonder what's underneath! It's all good. 🙂

To All Voice Over Talents that Worked for FREE

July 30, 2009 //  by Robin//  Leave a Comment

How many of us get taken advantage of?
How many of us get taken advantage of?

When you do the work, and you don’t get paid, you wonder,… what hurts most? Your pride, or your lack of common sense!

I’m a NYC voice talent that has been on the air in this market for over 25 years. Sometimes I work for free, when I know someone needs and can’t afford. Other times I’ll work within someone’s budget in order to build futures with that person. Most often, just like you, as a talent, I do get paid.

Some call me ‘a visionary,’ because I come up with cool ideas that unfortunately take most a few years to catch on to :-), some call me a mentor, because I take people under my wing, some call me ‘witty,’ I even had my PD at FRESH tell me I was the ‘most liked woman’ he’d ever met, while we were at the Conclave! LOL! (That being said after I paid a million of my buddys to go up to him and said, “Hey! I hear you hired my friend Robin Marshall!” Hahah! JK on the paid part!) I’m lucky he didn’t fire me on the spot from being sick of hearing my name! Let’s be real, I’m sure I’ve been called some negative names as well, because you can’t please em’ all, and I can be feisty! I admit to having an attitude! Ok-yuh??

I’m a wife, a mom, a daughter and to many, a friend.

I’ve recently encountered a group of men that all work for the same company ,that are giving me a pretty hard time. Each of these men, have been my friend, at one point. In fact I’ve found them to be warm, funny, and at times caring. I even worked for them! I have the proof that I worked for them.

I just never got paid for the work I did for them.

Now. As I mentioned above, I work for free, when I know someone is in need, as I’m sure you do too!!! If you’re my friend, you are exactly like me, in that way! It’s just the way we are… but this company that I worked for, is NOT a not for profit company. In fact, they’re pretty ‘up there.’

All it took was for me to send them an invoice, and they have resorted to ‘name calling tactics’ trying to cheapen who I am. Cheapen the friendships that we had. Cheapen what I feel and felt in my heart.
Funny too,… they’re all Dads, Sons, or Brothers… and even with having that honor in life, they have turned into street bullies, bullying a woman who’s just trying to make a living.
Since when did sending an invoice to friends, turn into having to call my attornies?

I’m running out of ‘rose colored glasses.’ :- ( BUT! It has smartened me up! I’m ready. I’ve got my dukes up! All my ‘Proof-ducks’ in a row…

I’m doing this for every voice talent out there, that has been taken advantage of. If you’d like to follow the story, just stay in touch. I could also use your support.
Thank you for reading this long note, and for being my friend.

Robin
PS. I’m keeping the company name quiet for now. I’m putting on my last pair of rose colored glasses, still having hope they do the right thing.
This tool, and our hearts, are what we make our living from.

Are You a 99 Out of 100 Person?

July 28, 2009 //  by Robin//  Leave a Comment

These Lips Tell the Story
These Lips Tell the Story

I mean, 99 people can LOVE you, and that ONE- that damn ONE person that doesn’t like you, you wind up obsessing over! RIDICULOUS.

I went to the Conclave, and hosted a beautiful dinner with Bob Lawrence. It should have been the highlight of my trip, but it was trumped by ONE person. I’m such an idiot sometimes. 🙂

The one person that didn’t like me, that fought with me on Face Book, and told me I was abusing FB ettiquette, way back  when I was so new to FB that he may have been right? Not sure on that one, but his comments left a bad taste in my mouth, and obviously MINE did his! We had never talked again, in fact we STRONGLY avoided each other, and many others knew what was going on.

We were introduced at the Conclave, and having never met in person, he said to our common friend, “OH! Robin and I are old FB friends!” I chuckled, took him aside, and said, I hope we can let ‘bygones be bygones.’ His resonse is what turned me around and became the highlight of my trip! He said, “Robin, you have become one of the most entertaining FB friends I’ve got! You went from doing what I thought was the WRONG thing, to doing everything fun and right! I really enjoy reading what you have to write!”

I was stunned! I gained my ONE back! No more 99 out of 100!!! Now I have to find something new to obsess over. It’s hard work being me.

Learning How to Blog is NOT THAT Easy!

July 28, 2009 //  by Robin//  Leave a Comment

don't talk to hear yourself talk!
don't talk to hear yourself talk!

I’m learning how to do the basics of blogging, and feel like a total idiot. but the more I write, the more I feel, maybe I should reserve the word TOTAL for after I’m done.  PARTLY might be better.  Wait! I’m actually starting to GET this!

Here’s the point, so many people talk to hear themseslves talk.  I take pride in being a great listener! Just please make it compelling.  I’d like to learn, be entertained and grow from what you have to say.  I tell my kids to try one new thing every day. THAT is how you grow. Being a good listener is part of the growth spurt.
