How to Go to Work, Knowing it may be your Last Day.

September 19, 2009 //  by Robin//  1 Comment

It's the end of the road.
It's the end of the road.

I guess that’s the epitome of being a professional? Or it’s the product of having it done many times before hand, and it’s the ‘numb factor!’  Being in radio, they say, ‘if you haven’t been fired 5 times, you really HAVEN’T been in radio.’  It’s still so difficult to not take it personally, even if it’s a simple format flip, economic saving, or downsizing.  We as artists, still hurt when it happens.  We all have ‘value.’ It’s awful when our value is abused.

Some of us were just meant to talk to others, and spread the word eliquently through the airwaves, knowing just how far to push an envelope is an art! Yet, it’s being taken away, and we wind up not knowing who to talk to any more…. sometimes, we wind up not talking at all, any more.  It’s a sad state of affairs.

LIRR VOICE GUY

September 7, 2009 //  by Robin//  Leave a Comment

Same Voice!
Same Voice!

Those of you from NY, did you ever notice how the Voice Person for the LIRR  sounds like John Sterling with the Yankees? “THE..12:55 …!” just like “THE Yankees…”

I bet it IS him, in his younger days… Lord knows that’s been the same voice on the railroad since I’ve been riding it?

Can we talk about the Laundry?

September 5, 2009 //  by Robin//  Leave a Comment

So..I asked my husband to Please, take the towels out of the dryer, I had to go bed. Said,”you don’t have to fold them, just put the wet clothes in the dryer.”He folds the towels. How difficult is it to fold a towel? I had to rub my eyes! Not ONE corner matched with another?  I had to refold all towels. You’re talking to a woman that doesn’t even own an IRON, but YES, the corners have to match!Walked him in the laundry room, asked him, ‘notice anything?’ He says,”Yeah! I did a great job on those towels!”
I posted this on FaceBook and here are some of the replies:

*Coming to the defense of men. He did do it though, right(smile)?
*You can lead a man to the laundry room, BUT….. 🙂
obviously doesn’t come from a military family :
*He knows now that you won’t ask him to do it again. So who’s the smart one?
*Give the guy a break. When I was a bachelor I never folded towels. Why would I? It’s not like you can’t dry off with a wrinkled towel.
*Your husband knows where the laundry room is?
*Iron? Now you lost me…..
*My response:
it’s that flat thing with a handle. You have to be careful cause I think it gets hot.
*Now ironing I can do! But you lost me at matching corners.
*Hmmm flat and hot sounds dangerous so I called my mother and asked her what an iron is and she is looking it up for us!
*My response:
Let me know what she says. My mom told me that it was a deficiency.
What's the Point?
What's the Point?

Radio Industry Madness

September 2, 2009 //  by Robin//  1 Comment

Say What You Mean!
Say What You Mean!

I don’t know about you, but I had a GREAT day today! I spoke with two upper level radio men at KRNB that showed me appreciation, understood my ‘radio integrity’ and respected my years in the inudstry. If everyone would treat each other with …this same respect, our industry would sail through, at least emotionally… without a ripple.

My God… I should have chosen ‘Religion’ as the basis of my profession. My Dad tried to tell me that! ‘Preach, Robin, preach,’ he’d say…
My mom insisted it didn’t matter WHAT I did, as long as I married someone that could FIX things. Obviously, I didn’t listen to EITHER of them?
Kidding aside,…I’m very serious here. Show faith in those around you, and it will come full circle. It has to. It’s a forward momentum, with a slight curve..

Picked Up by a TeenAger?

What Could he See in Me?
What Could he See in Me?

On my way home from work last night, I had an LIRR train transfer, got off, went to the little store and was approached by a tall, good looking teen, or so.  He said to me, “didn’t we go to school together?” (with a twinkle in his eye!) I looked at him and laughed, “School? What are you a senior??” He says, “no, it’s my first year in college, and I just wanted to stop you and talk to you because you’re pretty, and I sorta feel like I’ve been waiting for you.” I’m now thinking I must have  a sign on me that says, “Talk to me, I’m Gullible.” I start to walk away thinking this guy is off his rocker, and he FOLLOWS me! Running after me! Bunch of people all around, he says, “Wait! What’s your name, my name is Aaron.” I found myself admiring this kid for his chutspah, and told him my name, he held out his hand to shake mine. This all being within 5 minutes, he tells me he decided to go back to college after screwing around too much for the last couple years, he’s 21 and is really looking for a serious relationship. He was DEAD SERIOUS. I have a DAUGHTER his age! I wished him luck, and again he ran after me, saying, “wait… let me just give you my number.”  I had to stop, look him closely in the eye, thank him for making me feel special, and tell him I’m the wrong one he’s been waiting for. God Damn it, he was actually crestfallen! What??  Is Up??
