Bandaids are scarey when they're for the MOM

If you’re a mom, you know that when your child is hurt, scraped, or just feeling miserable… a bandaid can work wonders!  It can make the pain disappear, the bleeding Stop, and the fear distance itself.  PRETTY band aids, can make a tragic situation even blissful! Flowers over a boo boo? What could be better? Batman covering a cut? Instant healing power!

Even if your husband needs a bandaid, the family continues to move forward, while they may look to see what happened, make a face of disgust, or pity, they may even offer to help put it on the Dad.

But if YOU- the MOM tell your family that you need a Bandaid? The whole world STOPS!  The family is now in jeopardy! OMG! MOM’S HURT! WHO is going to make me dinner! WHO is going to wash my clothes! WHO is going to offer two hands for everything and anything from this moment on??

When the MOM is injured, the family goes down like the Titanic.  It’s amazing to watch. Sometimes I do it, just to see the effect!  Even ‘boo boo-less’!  It makes me feel important when I’m doubtful.  They’re all like deer, caught in the headlights the minute I say “does anyone know where the Bandaids are?”  It’s wonderful having that power.

Robin Marshall It is the TRUTH. I’m not trying to make anyone feel better. We have been ripped, torn, and shredded. I have seen and talked with men and women that were the BOMBS, that then had the rugs pulled out. FACTS are FACTS. You had to be known as the BOMB for a reason. They wouldn’t have paid you, otherwise. They just didn’t have the wherewithall to hold on to you.
This has become a learning curve. We can Grow from this. We can even take charge of our own futures! Tru Dat! If we were on the air, we can still ‘talk’ to people, mentor people, use our words to make a difference. If we were in management? Trust me! If we can manage creative artsy people like US? We can manage ANYONE! We have advantages, is all I’m saying….

Jaymie Gordon yeah but it’s still good to hear it–when it is so dry out there and competitive, good things are not heard often 😉

Robin Marshall we all have to know, that we are only a phone call away. We also must share a common secret- night time is the Worst time. Even our partners, husbands, wives, etc…can’t understand the pain, if they haven’t been in our shoes.
It’s a recession that’s hit everyone, yes, but what ‘s different on our end, is that even if we are in the management end of this industry, we’ve been touched by ‘art’ every day for years! How do you replace that? Art is an acquired taste! Just channel it elsewhere. You’ll be the new ‘push the envelope guy’ in a different industry, perhaps! LOL! The eccentric one! It’s good! We can take people to new levels. Outside the box thinking is what we need. In RADIO and in everyday life.

Dan Schultz thanks Robin, it’s truly hard some days to keep my head up some days getting rejected replying to job after job. I know my first real job is out there it’s just uncovering it is the hard part to use my talents.

Tony Hayes Robin…Well said. It’s easy to play the blame game, get down, angry and so on. Anger by the way is the most wasted emotion! Positive attitude is what it takes. If we think about yesterday and worry about tomorrow, we miss all the great things that happen TODAY! If you’re out of a radio gig, believe me I feel your pain. But, think of the times that you were out before. Hasn’t it always turned into something better? This time it will as well.

Robin Marshall I don’t want to misrepresent myself here. I use the term “We” because I am empathizing, having been in the situation of format flips, downsizing, etc.” I am fortunate -still- to have a job, but I’m wanting you all to know that there are people like me out there that are willing to help, that will keep our ears open for you. I know you would do the same for me!

Mark Vanness This year enjoy the fact you don’t have to miss the second half of the Super Bowl because you have to get up at 3:30a the next morning! Yeah!!!

Michael Dalfonzo Robin, your attitude is wonderful. We all need to look out for each other and help each other whenever we can. If you are fortunate enough to still be working reach out to your friends we are not. Sometimes all that is needed is an encouraging word. If you’re on the beach, believe in yourself. Don’t lose sight of your worth and keep at it. Persistence pays, the next call could be the one that makes it all happen.

Brian Pearl Thanks Robin. I needed to hear that. I have been unemployed for sixteen months now. It’s even more frustrating when you get rejection letters for jobs you know you are weil qualified for.

Anastasia Lewis I just wanted to say that you are SO right Robin. I am luckily still employed however I have seen ALLOT OF VERY TALENTED people laid off. I KNOW that these people are talented and yet they were let go. My heart breaks. Everything has changed. Our industry will never be the same again. We must look to the future with an open mind and a ability to re channel our creativity and get someone to pay us for it!

Jerryl Bell For many companies business takes precedent over TALENT and its unfortunate because its TALENT that enhances the business..and some companies don’t get it. But YES we all must remain positive, selective and believe in a HIGHER POWER to make it through.

My 17 year old, brought me the NewsPaper.

In the Paper?I didn’t even know he READ the Paper…but he prefaced it by saying, “Mom- I know you’re stressed, so before you prejudge this, …” I look at the headline, and see it’s about smoking pot. FIRST? I almost blew the only gasket I had left? Second? I told him “the ONLY reason I’m not BLASTING you right now… is because I know I can use this for material. Now GET OUT.”  How’s that for being a good mom?  He then said, “Ok. I’ll go talk to DAD.” UNREAL. 
So NOW what.

Sometimes Stamina Isn’t Enough

Need I say More?
Keep your Friends CLOSE. Not your enemies.

We sometimes feel invincible.  We just keep working, keep carrying, keep growing, turning around often to pull those that matter with us, when they’re not strong enough to walk on their own.  We feel the need to show them, that what they’re doing is WORTH something, not a waste of time. That they MATTER. Life is Good! Mentoring is healthy.  We keep building one brick at a time… and they become the mortar in between, as we do for THEIR wall!  We are each other’s glue.  We keep each other focused and help each other to hold on, when times are tough. 

Even if we feel this strength can last forever, one day we wake up and as strong as were, is as weak as we’ve become. Overnight. It’s one brick that’s out of place, that shatters our foundation. No matter how hard we try to rebuild, sometimes we have to know how to fold.

Sometimes fate wins. Depression creeps inside our veins, and easily stays put. How to battle, and win that war is the question. 

It’s holding on to your friends, and letting them hold on to YOU. It’s a win-win.

There IS Abuse of 17 year old boys. UPDATE

Our Son was Robbed of his SWAN SONGEven though our kids are Big, in fact bigger than Us… they are still at risk of being abused.
Here’s what our family has been dealing with for the last 4 years. Not mentioning names, there’s no need, but our son has been the starting keeper for the Varsity team for the last 3 1/2 years. The coach plays headgames with all the starters… not just my son. Has for years. If your child earns the reward of being a starter on a team, he should feel confident in owning that position, but to be fair to the coach, it’s also his to lose. Make sense?

My kid, has been this coaches ‘whipping boy’ for four years. I’m not saying my kid is perfect! TRUST me. I will say, he learns from his mistakes, he’s respectful to adults, and he’s been the starting keeper for all his club teams as well, including the number one NY Academy team and still is! Even with all these attributes, this coach has battered him emotionally, blaming every goal on him, refusing to slap his hand when he comes off the field, in fact, he wasn’t told he was Captain, until the beginning of a game when the refs called for the Captains. This coach reluctantly pushed my son in. After the game he still wouldn’t let my son know, if that was a permanent position or not, etc, etc. Three weeks ago, my son spritzed a bit of water on the back of the coaches legs, as a bit of a prank, while sitting on the bench and this coach turned around and slapped him hard across the face. Do they still do this, in this day and age? I’ve even recently found out, that last year, he used one of our kids as a regular ‘punching bag.’ This may have been ok, 20 years ago… but now??

We let it go. Our son asked us to. I did mention it to the assistant coach, and he made light of it, saying, this coach had done all kinds of crazy things, when HE was his player in the past! I bit my tongue, and watched as the team beat the national number one team in the country, and continued on to become the first place winners in their league.

As this happened, right before playoffs are to begin, the coach pulled my kid out. No reason. Just did it. This, …after my son had been an integral part of getting them to where they are today.

I have now been forced to report these actions to not only the principal, but the superintendent has been informed of the fact that my kid was slapped. This coach has ruined so many boys lives. We’ve seen it with our own eyes, and we always prayed it would never happen to ours.

We are guilty of not stepping up to the plate earlier on, when we saw him do it to others, and now our friends, with kids on that team have not stepped up to the plate for us. They’re all in fear for their own kids, understandably so… but it still hurts.

This coach not only robbed my son, of his final days in HS soccer, he robbed us. All the years of watching through peaked fingers, on the sidelines, running his shorts to school because ‘he forgot’, clapping for his friends when they made a great goal, watching with pride as other parents cheered for mine… it’s all been stripped away, by this vendictive man.

Tomorrow’s the second playoff game, and my son, the starting keeper has to sit on the bench after putting up with all this crap for 4 years. The thing is, he still talks the game to the players from that bench as the keeper should. He cheers for them, and he tears.

I’m devastated. When your kid hurts, you hurt worse.

IT’S NOW A MONTH LATER:
Not to rehash this… but after all was said and done- we want you to understand as PARENTS, and as KIDS that play Sports, or Dance- you CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, if you stand up together. These coaches and instructors should have your child’s BEST INTEREST at heart, NOT their own.
Thank you for your support on this matter.
Many came forward. It still brings tears to my eyes.

THE COACH HAS BEEN FIRED.

There were FOUR heroes in this story.
1. The Principal- He believed in us. He held our hands through this.
2. The Attorney for the school district. He also believed in what was right and he persevered.
3. Our Legal Advisor. He not only saw what was legally correct, he knew what was morally -incorrect.
3. My SON. He stood on the sidelines of that last game, cheering his team on, and turning to the crowd and getting them hyped up too, for the benefit of his team members.

STAND UP- if what you see, is WRONG. We’ll all be right here to hold your hand too.
